Now you have found this site, you may well wish to know a few things about straight razors, their new popularity and maybe ‘can My Grandad’s razor be brought back into service?’
Taking the questions above in order it can be said that a straight razor, far from being the fearsome weapon that most people imagine, was - for hundreds of years - an everyday item in the bathroom, as common as toothbrushes and soap. Yes, of course they are very sharp - they have to shave a man’s face, after all - but with a little practice they are simple to use and no more dangerous than any other sharp knife.
Their newly-found popularity probably arises from the fact that many people are conscious of the ‘throwaway’ nature of modern razors and have come to realise just how durable and effective straight razors are in comparison. Too, the shave quality is very high and we men do like that!
So - can that old razor of Grandad’s be brought back into service? The answer is, generally, yes. Even being left in a drawer for fifty years seldom destroys a razor - as long as it is kept dry it will last indefinitely. The biggest problem is that when Grandad shoved it into the drawer after being seduced by a nice shiny safety or electric model, he probably didn’t bother too much about leaving it nice and sharp. Also, the intervening years attack the extremely fine edge of the blade first (in general), leaving it blunt and uneven - though you would probably still consider it to be pretty sharp!

Well, we do, of course, especially on the vintage site but we realise that not everyone wants to either buy a razor (maybe they do indeed just want Grandad’s sharpening up) or search through a site for information. That’s why this site only has two pages - this one and the next where we list our ordering procedure and scale of charges. We think you will find them reasonable and we are always happy to answer any questions you may have - email us here but please do read the next page first!
